  1. Scan and Read Pro (Includes foreign language support) (for sighted users)
  2. Text Cloner Pro - No voice, designed to work with a screen reader, e.g., JAWS, Window-Eyes. (Includes language support)

What if I just want to read existing documents that are already on my computer?

The following products can read existing electronic documents to you:

  1. E-Text Reader
  2. Talking Word Processor
  3. Universal Reader
  4. Universal Reader Plus
  5. Text-To-Audio
  6. Scan and Read Pro (includes foreign language support)
  7. PDF Equalizer ML

From each of the applications you can open documents in standard formats like Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, text files and PDFs.

What products would you recommend for a blind user?

For general reading, if you have a "screen reader" such as JAWS or Window-Eyes, we recommend Text Cloner Pro. Text Cloner Pro allows you to scan any hard copy text such as regular mail, magazines, and books and save the scanned material in a digital format that your screen reader can use to read to you.

For general money management activities, Talking Checkbook is ideal. It is fully accessible (unlike other well-known money management applications) and works directly with your screen reader. It also lets you manage multiple accounts (savings and checking), search all transactions and even write checks. Talking Checkbook also works without screen readers for anyone wanting a straightforward program to manage their daily financial activities.

Are there any products that can help an individual with general word processing including proofreading?

Yes, our Talking Word Processor is an ideal package for proofreading and works with all standard format documents (such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, and general text). In addition to reading aloud, it has great proofreading features like spell check, grammar check, thesaurus, dictionary and word prediction.

What products would you recommend for individuals with low vision, but reasonable PC skills?

For low vision, we would recommend Scan and Read Pro.

Product Specific Questions

Answers to our most common questions

Scan and Read Pro

I am having trouble using Scan and Read on my Vista system.

Because of Windows Vista Security controls it may be necessary to take some additional steps in order for Scan and Read Pro to work as it is intended.

1. Close all running applications on your computer. If any applications do not close, please restart the computer.

2. Locate the shortcut for Scan and Read Pro then right click and “Run as Administrator”.  If this option does not show up when you right click, you will have to go to C:\ Program Files\Premier AT\ and then right click on snrpro.exe.

3. Launch Scan and Read Pro and go to the “Scan” menu and “Reset the OCR” you will get a popup window that says “OCR Engine Successfully Loaded” click OK.

4. You can now use Scan and Read Pro.

Universal Reader & Universal Reader Plus

I clicked on the read button for Universal Reader and it says 'Nothing to read'. What do I do?

Here is how you keep that from happening:

1. Highlight the text you want to read.

2. Hold down the control key [CTRL] and tap the F6 Key (CTRL + F6).

Universal Reader will locate the selected text and start reading.

Things to remember:

Once you have tapped the F6 key you do not need to keep holding the CTRL key down, you can release it.
Just tap the F6 Key, do not hold it down.

Why do I need to do his now when all I had to do was click on the read button before?

With the most recent update from Microsoft to patch some holes in their Windows products, they stopped programs from sending commands to other programs. This has stopped Universal Reader from automatically getting the text. This forced us to find an alternative method. We now recommend users to use the hot key stroke “CTRL+F6” to accomplish the same task.

Generally, you should consider minimizing the Universal Reader when it is not in use. Then when you are ready to read, just highlight the text you want to read, press the CTRL key and tap the F6 key. If you do this while the Universal Reader is minimized, it will open up the text you have selected automatically and start reading.
